DTI Foundation participates in the 2026 Catalonia Transplant Coordinators Meeting

DTI Foundation participated in the 2026 meeting of organ and tissue transplant coordinators of Catalonia, organized by the Catalan Transplant Organization (OCATT) and held in Barcelona.

The meeting brought together professionals from the Catalan donation and transplantation system to address key clinical and organizational aspects, as well as to share experiences and review recent activity.

The programme included several roundtable discussions focused on:

  • updates in organ donation
  • donation outside the hospital setting
  • family interviews and refusals
  • updates on substances of human origin (SoHO)
  • new biovigilance tools (SNISP)
  • limits in kidney donation

Sessions included transplant coordinators and specialists from leading hospitals such as Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Vall d’Hebron, Hospital de Bellvitge, Hospital de Sant Pau, Hospital del Mar, Germans Trias i Pujol, Arnau de Vilanova (Lleida) and Hospital Josep Trueta (Girona), among others.

Beyond the technical content, the meeting highlighted the role of transplant coordinators and the teams involved in the donation process. These professionals work in complex clinical environments, where coordination, decision-making and communication are essential to ensure the system operates effectively.

Their work is fundamental to maintaining the continuity, quality and effectiveness of donation and transplantation programmes.

DTI Foundation continues to engage in these types of forums, focused on knowledge exchange and the continuous improvement of donation and transplantation systems.

40 years of donation after circulatory death marked at Hospital Clínic Barcelona

Hospital Clínic Barcelona recently hosted a commemorative event marking the 40th anniversary of the first donation after circulatory death, highlighting four decades of clinical progress, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration in organ donation and transplantation.

Organised in collaboration with the Private Foundation Món Clínic Barcelona, the event brought together leading professionals in the field to reflect on the evolution of donation after circulatory death and its growing role in modern transplantation programmes.

The session, coordinated by David Paredes-Zapata and Ángel Ruiz, included the participation of experts such as Dr. Martí Manyalich and Dr. Gabriel Gondolesi, who emphasised the importance of continued collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation in advancing clinical practice.

A key moment of the event was the presentation of the book Trascender. Historias sobre la donación y el trasplante en la piel de los protagonistas, which offers a perspective on organ donation and transplantation through real-life experiences of patients, families, and healthcare professionals, highlighting the human dimension of this field.

The anniversary also served to recognise the ongoing work of multidisciplinary teams involved in donation and transplantation, as well as the essential role of donors and their families, whose contribution remains fundamental to making transplantation possible.

World Organ Donation Day: A Global Commitment to Life

Barcelona, 14 October 2025

Every year, World Organ Donation Day reminds us of the extraordinary power of generosity — the act of giving life to others.

At DTI Foundation (Donation and Transplantation Institute), our mission is to transform that generosity into action. For more than two decades, we have worked with ministries of health, hospitals, and international organisations to strengthen donation and transplantation systems worldwide.

Through education, consultancy, and research, DTI promotes ethical and sustainable frameworks that ensure every donation is performed with transparency, equity, and respect.

“Organ donation is more than a medical procedure — it is an expression of solidarity that unites humanity,”
says Dr. Martí Manyalich, President of DTI Foundation.

Today, we honour all donors and their families whose generosity makes life possible, and we reaffirm our commitment to continue building a global culture where organ donation becomes part of life.

💚 Together, we give life.

📰 DTI Foundation at the World Transplant Congress, San Francisco

San Francisco, August 2025 — A delegation from DTI Foundation travelled to the World Transplant Congress (WTC 2025) to engage with the global transplantation community. Throughout the meeting our team:

  • Shared experience. We presented ongoing projects in organ-donation training, quality improvement and international cooperation.

  • Learned from leaders. Sessions on innovation, equitable access and digital health offered valuable insights that will enrich our programmes.

  • Built alliances. Informal discussions and scheduled meetings opened the door to new collaborations with transplant centres, patient associations and technology partners on five continents.

Back in Barcelona, the team will use what it learned in San Francisco to strengthen DTI Foundation’s training courses, consultancy work and research initiatives, always with the goal of expanding safe and ethical transplantation worldwide. We thank the WTC organisers and every colleague who shared ideas with us during these inspiring days.
