EU-CHINA KeTLOD Project Closure!

Final Meeting & Media Event in Guangzhou, China

On 1-2 September 2018, the Final Meeting & Media Event of the EU-CHINA KeTLOD Project was held in Guangzhou, China.

The Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University welcomed more than 40 professionals from 13 partner institutions established in Europe and China.

During the Final Meeting all the partners worked together to achieve the following objectives: to review all the activities developed during the project; to discuss the postgraduate program quality and evaluation results; to optimise deliverables and ensure their dissemination; to Constitute a KeTLOD Network on Organ Donation.

The first day was dedicated mainly to the Project Management and Quality control activities. Through workshops and group discussions the further steps were set up for the Project Final Report submission to the European Commission.

On 2nd of September, the Media Event was organised to disseminate the project results. Among the honoured guests were:

During the event each Chinese University had a chance to present the implementation and impact of the project on institutional and regional level. This session was followed by the media questions and short discussion.

Moreover, the continuation and transferability of the KeTLOD Postgraduate Program was boosted. The KeTLOD Networking agreement was signed in this regard. Nevertheless, all Chinese Universities searched for different formulas for the future editions, according to their local policies and structures.

In the end of the Media Event the initiative ¨Organ donation, I do !¨ was launched to raise awareness about organ donation in China and to spread knowledge and information how to become a donor.

 

The Final Meeting ended with a visit of the Southern Medical University, Department of the Human Science where a special section of Organ Donation is exposed.

We would like to thank all partners, officials and external experts for contributing to the success of the Final meeting. It was really memorable experience for all of us.


China Organ Donation Forum in Fuzhou, Fujian

DTI Foundation president Marti Manyalich was invited to the China Organ Donation Forum held in Fuzhou, the capital of the Fujian Province on the 8th of September.

The Forum was organised by the China Organ Transplantation Development Foundation (COTDF) in conjunction with the local authorities. The open ceremony was chaired by the COTDF president Professor Jiefu Huang and several presidents of the main Organ Procurement Organizations were in between the key note speakers.

The forum was the perfect opportunity to assess and analyse the organ donation programs in the different Chinese provinces.

The evening preceding the event the first China Hospital Organ Procurement Organization Association committee meeting took place.


The 24th Advanced International Training Course gets U.E.M.S. Accreditation

We are glad to announce that after getting the UEMS accreditation for the Advanced International Training Course held in Spanish language we have just achieved the same for the English version!

The course has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®). The EACCME® is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.

All the participants that will complete the course schedule will be awarded with a certificate of a maximum of 28 European CME credits (ECMEC®s).

Moreover, through an agreement between the European Union of Medical Specialists and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME® credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Information on the process to convert EACCME® credits to AMA credits can be found at www.ama-assn.org/education/earn-credit-participation-international-activities.

 

 


3rd Intermediate Training Course in Hong Kong

For the 3rd time this august, DTI Foundation were pleased to organize the 3rd Transplant Procurement management course in Hong- Kong.

Together with the Hospital Health authority of Hong Kong, The Queen Mary hospital and the international expertise team of TPM-DTI the third Transplant Procurement Management course was held from 13th till 15th of August 2018.

This 3-days course was attended by 40 health care professionals, mainly from Intensive care unit, Neurology and Neurosurgery departments working in the most important hospitals of Hong- Kong. The training covered basic concepts and procedures of the donation process focused on the needs identified with the local team. Lectures, discussions and onsite simulation were the principal components of the training program.  The participatory approach of this training encouraged interaction, personal opinions and experiences to be shared with the experts.

The support given by the local faculty helped in shaping the course and delivering it in the most beneficial way for the participants. We do believe the scientific knowledge and technical skills gained form this course will develop the participants professional’s competences as specialists in the field of organ donation.

"More than words" campaign from Repsol Foundation supports our Trinidad & Tobago programme

Through its campaign “More than words”, Repsol Foundation is promoting a better quality of life for vulnerable groups, encouraging social integration and meeting the critical needs of specific communities. Among these projects it is DTI Foundation’s programme for healthcare professionals and for raising awareness in society about organ donation and transplants, with the participation of the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU) of Trinidad and Tobago.

The collaboration between REPSOL Foundation and DTI started on 2010 with the main goal of establishing the self-sufficiency in the deceased donation program and make Trinidad and Tobago a reference country in the field for the CARICOM region.

 


Dr Martí Manyalich receives the Josep Trueta award for scientific research

The Academy of Medical and Health Sciences Foundation of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands has recognized Dr. Martí Manyalich - president of the DTI Foundation (Donation & Transplantation Institute) located in the Parc Científic de Barcelona - with the Josep Trueta award for scientific research. The act of delivery of the award was held yesterday, May 22, in the auditorium of the institution.

Dr. Martí Manyalich has been working in the field of organ, tissue and cell donation and transplantation for more than 30 years. Since 2008 he is the president of the DTI Foundation, which this year celebrates his tenth anniversary, and director of the TPM program, dedicated to the training of health professionals in donation and transplantation worldwide for more than 25 years. He is also a transplant advisor at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and a professor in the Department of Surgery and Medical-Surgical Specialties of the University of Barcelona. His experience in the field of organ donation and transplantation is globally recognized; He is the author of several scientific publications and member of the most relevant international organizations in this field.

The Academy is the largest scientific community of health professionals and one of the oldest in Catalonia. Its objective is to promote continuing education in the health sciences and to work in collaboration with other institutions around the world related to this field. Founded in 1872, it is a meeting place for health professionals from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia and Andorra.

In 1987 the Academy established the Josep Trueta Prize with the aim of rewarding the scientific career of a person or a research team in the field of health sciences. The winner must have published one or more scientific publications in the last five years worldwide, at least one of which during the year of the call, carried out in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia or Andorra.

Launching of the international community of DTI Foundation

DTI Community, the new international project of DTI Foundation (Institute of Donation and Transplantation) was presented by the executive director of DTI, Dr María Paula Gómez, during  the framework of the celebration that was organized in the Parc Científic de Barcelona to commemorate the 10 years of life of DTI.

This proposal is a new community that brings together all the people and institutions that share knowledge about organ donation and transplantation. Its objective is to disseminate information about organ donation and transplantation and to promote the development of the DTI Foundation at global level.

Thus, the new initiative of DTI aims to connect students of the international training courses offered by the Foundation, the Transplant Procurement Management (TPM), with all the people and institutions interested in organ donation.

The main values ​​of the community are respect, diversity and transparency and it is composed of four different profiles of people: students, friends, volunteers and ambassadors.

In addition, this project offers great opportunities and services for its members to satisfy the diversity of interests and needs that prevail in the sector. These benefits are: publication of job offers, conducting specialized webinars with internationally recognized health professionals, publication of news and events in the field of donation and transplantation and a solidarity bag, which aims to collect funds for training purposes for healthcare professionals from around the world.

DTI Foundation: 10 years saving lives through donation and transplantation

On 10th of May, took place the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the DTI Foundation (Donation & Transplantation Institute) at the Parc Científic of Barcelona. More than a hundred attendees went to the event. Since its formation, DTI has carried out 21 international cooperation projects and has earned 123,500 years of life.

Many authorities attended to the ceremony, such as Dr Martí Manyalich, the president of the DTI Foundation, Dr Beatriz Dominguez, the director of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), Dr Jaume Tort, the director of the Catalan Transplant Organization (OCATT), Dr Francesc Cardellach, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (UB) and Mr. Ignasi Belda, deputy director of the Parc Científic of Barcelona.

During the celebration, several presentations were made. The director of the ONT, Dr Beatriz Dominguez talked about the organ donation and transplantation in Spain and around the world. Also, it was officially presented the DTI Community by the executive director of the Foundation, Dr María Paula Gómez. Dr Manyalich was also honoured with the honorary distinction of 'Hippocratic Physician', awarded by the Hippocratic Movement of the Island of Kos, Greece, homeland of the “Father of Medicine” Hippocrates. This award recognizes doctors who have distinguished themselves by two key aspects in the art of medicine, according to Hippocrates: scientific excellence and dedication to humanity.

Moreover, congratulatory videos of some of the international experts working with the Foundation who could not attend the event in person but who were present on this special day were also projected.

Leading organization in transfer of knowledge in organ donation and transplant

DTI Foundation was born in 2008 with the aim of helping to increase the donation in the world and save more lives. The entity facilitates and improves resources so that organ donation is possible all over the world.

The Foundation's commitment to society is to improve the quality of life of the population and to promote the development of tissues and regenerative medicine. The resources in which the organization has invested to achieve are the knowledge and the training of health professionals through the international educational program TPM (Transplant Procurement Management). Operating since 1991, more than 14,000 healthcare professionals have been trained in more than 100 countries around the world.

Therefore, DTI has professionalized the donation and transplant activity through the life experience and knowledge of all the people who are part of the Foundation. Consequently, it is helping to raise awareness about that the organs of deceased patients can be lives for the patients who are waiting for them.

A donation is a great human act: by the doctors who know how to transmit the need to give the organs and by the family members, who are generous and choose the best possible decision.

Collaboration between DTI Foundation and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to implement a deceased organ donation program

The collaboration between DTI Foundation and the UAE started in 2015, initially with an educational program aiming to improve the knowledge and skills of the health care professionals involved in the organ donation program. A total of 250 physicians and nurses, mainly from the high potential hospitals, have been trained as Transplant Procurement Managers (TPMs).

A second phase of the cooperation program started in 2017 adding another layer of support to the program. A team of DTI international experts have been visiting UAE hospitals. During the hospital visits, interviews with healthcare professionals have been conducted, different educational initiatives have taken place and an alert system for donor identification have been outlined.  Further recommendations for the establishment of in-hospitals organ procurement units have been developed.

The first visit took place in July 2017, since then six brain death patients have become organ donors resulting in 19 organs being recovered. The cardiac, liver and lung transplant programs have commenced and an organ sharing system between UAE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been implemented.

In April 2018 the third visit materialized including a meeting with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) CEO Dr.  Mohamed Rashed Al Qubaisi who offered his complete support to the deceased organ donation program.

The main goal for this visit was the development of quality control tools based on the Organ Donation European Quality System (ODEQUS) model. Also, a meeting for the implementation of an integrated kidney waiting list took place in SEHA Dialysis Services.

Further TPM courses and expert visits have been scheduled for 2018 to continue with the cooperation plan aiming to achieve complete implementation of the deceased organ donation program.
