European Solidarity Corps 2022

DTI has applied for this program. Thanks to this application, during 2022 DTI has been able to count with the participation of two volunteers. They have participated in two different projects for 9 months.  The main goal of the activity has been to support the development and implementation of organ and tissue training programs. The reception of the volunteers in the Foundation has allowed them to be trained both in the field of donation and transplantation and in the learning training and cooperation.

The European Solidarity Corps (ESC), known until 2016 as European Voluntary Service (EVS), is an international volunteering program by the European Commission for young people to go individually or in teams to another country, usually from one European country to another, to work for a non-profit cause. Since 2017, the program also offers opportunities for European youth to get engaged as volunteers in their own communities.

Outstanding Concert in Luz de Gas

DTI Foundation is honored to have been able to co-organize a solidarity concert in Luz de Gas Barcelona. The concert, which took place last Thursday 17th of November, put together 4 different non-profit organizations to raise awareness about different challenges we face daily in our societies. The different organizations that also participated in the event were: Fundació Boscana, Kadiandú and Recuérdame Alzheimer.

The band Por Fin Viernes with his solidarity music played during the concert. Thanks to the dedication they have had throughout all these years we were able to raise awareness about organ donation.

DTI Foundation fundraised 1473.33€ which will be used for future scholarships. Our hope is that this concert will serve as a starting point for further training for healthcare professionals in developing.

Spreading awareness about our objectives requires the help and participation of the public, and it is through events and fundraisers like this concert that we can best achieve that mission.

International Conference for Initiatives on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation

DTI Foundation participated in the International Conference for Initiatives on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation in Abu Dhabi.

During the congress, Abu Dhabi’s Ministry of Health awarded our President Marti Manyalich, in recognition for his contribution to the organ donation and transplantation program in the country. Estephan Arredondo received the award as Dr. Martí Manyalich was not able to attend on those dates.

We are honored to have been recognized by Abu Dhabi’s Ministry of Health, H.E. Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Hamed, and we expect to keep collaborating with the country in the future.

Our team was in a stand in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from the 7th until the 9th of November. It has been a pleasure to see Dr. Chloë Ballesté and Estephan Arredondo present DTI Foundation and the educational programs during the event.

DTI receives a visit from Brazil

Marcelo Santos and Rafael Pimentel from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, have visited the DTI offices in Barcelona.

They have worked on a research project on the validation of quality indicartors on deceased donation based on the ODEQUS project. During their visit they have had the opportunity to reunite with some DTI team experts.

ODEQUS was a European project coordinated by the University of Barcelona and with the involvement of DTI experts. ODEQUS was a three years project (October 2010-December 2013) co-financed by the European Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC20091108) which aimed to define a methodology to evaluate the organ procurement performance at hospital level.

Official Statement of the death of Dr. José M. García Buitrón

DTI Foundation - Donation & Transplantation Institute- feels deeply shocked by the loss of beloved Dr. José M. García Buitrón who passed away this Saturday in Madrid. From DTI we send our deepest condolences to family and friends and share the sad news with our experts and collaborators.

Dr. Buitrón was a founding member and Vice President of DTI Foundation, former director of the Oficina de Coordinación de Trasplantes and Manager of Complejo Hospitalario de A Coruña (CHUAC). As a collaborator in the foundation for 30 years, he has carried out his training and cooperation work in countries such as Trinidad, Tobago, the Philippines and Cuba, among many others.

A very close and endearing person as well as an excellent professional, Dr. Buitrón has always been an inspiration and a model for all members of our international community related to donation and transplantation. We will always remember him as a friend and colleague, and as the person who has left an everlasting impression in our professional and human journey.

DTI attends TTS Congress 2022

DTI Foundation took part in the hybrid 29th International Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS 2022) during September 11th to 14th.

Our team of experts had the pleasure of assisting to the Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and present the newest courses and educational methodology in stands N7 and N8 in the main hall.

Many people have joined us in our stand to give a shot at an augmented reality simulation. They were able to see a Controlled DCD patient and guidelines on how to manage a controlled DCD donor with normothermic regional perfusion.

Thanks to the opportunity The Transplantation Society gave us, DTI experts started by presenting at a Pre-Congress Workshop (Improving donation practices for better transplant system) that consisted of four different activities:

  • General introduction to organ donation.
  • Donor Detection and evaluation: participants played Game of donors and entered the virtual reality hospital to practice the selection and evaluation of donors.
  • Brain death and donor management: participants dealt with real case clinical scenarios.
  • Family approach for organ donation: participants practiced through VR how to break bad news to the family and how to approach organ donation consent.

This activity was possible thanks to the participation of Alejandro Nino Murcia (Colombia), Gabriel Gondolesi (Argentina) and Marcelo Cantarovich (Canada). Other international experts that participated were Marco Sacchi (Italy). Marián Irazábal (Spain), Omid Ghobadi (Iran) and Chloë Ballesté (Spain).

During the congress our Director of International Cooperation and Development, Chloë Ballesté, presented the final results of the ODISSeA project. She also had two more presentations to present the Tissue Banking and Advanced Therapies Training Program and another one to present the International Master in Donation and Transplantation of Organ, Tissues and Cells.

The head of Educational Programs, Carmen Blanco, did an amazing presentation explaining 30 years of TPM Training, its first steps until VR activities. Dr. Ali Al Obaidli summarized the key aspects of the UAE organ donation model and its current organ donation results during the campfire session in the TTS Congress 2022. This initiative is developed by SEHA with the support of international DTI experts. The Campfire sessions ended with Marián Irazábal talking about I-DTI, a second opinion platform.

The Congress was a great opportunity. We want to thank The Transplantation Society for the great organization.

Proving Small Acts of Kindness Can Make a Big Change

From April 4th to 8th DTI Foundation is taking part in the Little By Little Campaign, aimed at continuing fundraising for our project Save One Million Lives. During 5 days Global Giving will be matching 50% of all donations up to $50, meaning your donation will go further to help save one million lives.

The Little-by-Little campaign is a one week long campaign, the money raised goes to our project Save One Million Lives. Every year 1 million people are added to the list of those to receive an organ transplant. Sadly, less than 10% of the surgical procedures needed globally are performed.

This project empowers doctors and nurses from Africa, Asia, and South America by giving them critical knowledge needed to increase organ donations, train local medical experts as well as implement organ donation and transplantation programs.
