Training Case Managers for Organ and Tissue Transplants: An International Health Innovation Project

As part of the MODHS-MOT Case Managers Development Program, DTI Foundation has launched an international initiative aimed at transforming the military hospitals of the Saudi Ministry of Defense into centers of excellence for organ and tissue transplants.

This one-year training program began in September 2024 and will run until September 2025. The main focus is to train healthcare professionals (such as nurses and radiology technicians), while also involving non-healthcare professionals, ensuring an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to the care of transplant patients.

Currently, the program is in its second phase, which includes specialized sessions on immunological aspects, psychosocial care, patient education, and organ-specific care. These modules are designed to provide participants with in-depth knowledge of the various aspects of the transplant process, from patient evaluation to postoperative follow-up.

This program is the result of a strategic collaboration between DTI Foundation, the Saudi Ministry of Defense, and Eight Eye of Training, and is aimed at significantly improving the quality of organ transplant care, both in Saudi Arabia and internationally.

The training of Case Managers in this field is essential to improve the coordination and follow-up of transplant patients, contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the transplant system. As we advance in this project, our goal remains the same: to continue working to improve organ donation and transplantation globally.

With initiatives like this, DTI Foundation reaffirms its commitment to healthcare education, knowledge exchange, and the continuous improvement of transplant systems worldwide.

DTI and the SCOT collaborated in the organization of two courses in Organ Donation across Saudi Arabia

The Donation and Transplantation Institute (DTI), in collaboration with the Saudi Center of Organ Donation (SCOT), recently organized two training courses in the cities of Riyadh and Abha. This initiative, held this week, is part of DTI's ongoing collaboration with SCOT, aimed at enhancing the deceased organ donation program in Saudi Arabia.

There were 43 participants in Riyadh and 70 in Abha. The courses offered participants to gain valuable insights into organ donation and transplantation by sharing international best practices from countries such as Italy, Belgium, Brazil, France, and Spain.

We sincerely thank King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh and Aseer Central Hospital in Abha for their invaluable collaboration and the facilities to conduct these courses successfully.

We commend SCOT's efforts to improve the deceased donation program in the country and eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes of this collaboration in the near future.

2nd edition of ODISSeA postgraduate program

DTI Foundation is very proud to take part in the second edition of ODISSeA (Organ Donation Innovative Strategies in Southeast Asia) postgraduate program in University of Santo Tomas (Philippines). This project was possible thanks to the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission.

It is an important milestone in our field, as organ donation has been included in the medical university curriculum. It is crucial that young healthcare professionals are familiar with organ donation after death from the start of their careers.

Organ donation rates in Philippines in 2022 compared to 2019 have increased by more than 100%. The majority of the referrals came from hospitals where graduates from the first batch of UST ODISSeA are working.

This postgraduate program is mainly focused in theoretical and practical contents on deceased and living organ donation, but also includes awareness events among the university and hospital staff to spread the word on why organ donation is important and how does organ donation work.

SEHA and DTI Foundation organize an event to promote Organ Donation in UAE in the framework of the EXPODUBAI 2020

Abu Dhabi Health Services (SEHA) and DTI Foundation in collaboration with the Spain Pavilion organized an awareness event to promote the organ donation in UAE. The event took place in the Spain Pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai. It drew many attendees in person as well online last Saturday.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to meet and exchange knowledge about organ donation and raise awareness in the UAE.

Since 2015, DTI Foundation's collaboration with SEHA and the UEA National Transplant committee has been beneficial, creating protocols and guidelines for the management of an organ donation system in UAE.

DTI Foundation is currently supporting SEHA for the consolidation of a deceased organ donation program with a SEUSA (Spanish, Europe, USA) program, to increase self-sufficiency in deceased organ donation. DTI Foundation looks forward to grow organ donation numbers in the future.

So far, more than 390 physicians and nurses have been trained in the organ donation and transplantation field. Since September 2021, the project has made possible the achievement of 38 utilized donors and 159 organs transplanted.

DTI Foundation trained more than 50 healthcare professionals from Kerala, India

More than 50 healthcare professionals, including physicians, intensivists and nurses, from Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala, India, attended the TPM online intermediate course that took place between January 18th and 20th. This was possible thanks to the collaboration between DTI Foundation and KNOS (Kerala Network for Organ Sharing) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Kerala, and the funding of Eurofins.

Faculty from DTI and local experts from India gave lectures and the corresponding workshops. Dr. Marco Sacchi, from Italy, and Dr. Marián Irazábal, from Spain, gave a class about Organ Donation update in Covid times, a recently added subject given the current circumstances. Dr. Chitra P, from India, taught Death by neurological criteria alongside Spanish doctor Ignacio Martínez. Dr. Núria Masnou, who talked about Breaking bad news and family approach, complemented with Dr. Raman Muraleedharan’s contribution.

Kerala Online course

The main goal of the TPM intermediate online course was providing knowledge on organ donation to healthcare professionals, while empowering detection of potential donors and, thus, increasing the donation rates.

Kerala is a state in the south-eastern region of India, with a population of approximately 35 million people. Kerala has been fighting against bad practice in deceased organ donation observed in other states in India. KNOS’s aim is to specialize their healthcare professionals in the deceased organ donation process to change these tendencies and start walking towards an organ donation and transplantation system that contributes to improving the  quality of life of its population.
