TEODOR, the most recent European project on training in organ donation and transplantation
TEODOR: Transeuropean Educational initiative in Organ Donation and Transplantation is an Erasmus+ project funded by the European Commission under the program KA2 - Strategic partnerships in the field of education and training.

This project will be developed between 2020 and 2023, aiming at designing and piloting a new and innovative training programme on organ donation and transplantation for physicians & relevant healthcare personnel from Latvia, Czech Republic, and Lithuania. The training will be implemented with the support of Spain and Sweden, given their expertise in organ donation and transplantation.
Partners:
- Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, Latvia (Leader)
- DTI DONATION & TRANSPLANTATION INSTITUTE, Spain
- UNIVERSITAT DE BARCELONA, Spain
- SKANE LANS LANDSTING, Sweden
- Fakultní nemocnice Královské Vinohrady, Czech Republic
- National Transplant Bureau under the Ministry of Health, Lithuania
- University of Latvia, Latvia
TEODOR will address Key Professionals from:
- For organ and tissue donation, the Key Donation Professionals (KDPs) will include healthcare personnel from Intensive Care Units, Emergency Departments, Neuro-critical wards, organ donor/transplant coordinators
- For organ transplantation, the Key Transplantation Professionals (KTPs) Immunologists, transplant surgeons, internal medicine specialists managing the transplant patient before and after the surgical procedure such as nephrologists, hepatologists, cardiologists, pneumonologists, etc.
The project will last 36 months and will implement the following activities:
- Data analysis before and after TEODOR educational intervention, with the aim to evaluate the programme impact on learners’ knowledge and their clinical performance after the training implementation.
- Design and implement a Train the Trainers (TxT) programme targeting all the future trainers to be involved in the TEODOR training programme
- To design and implement the TEODOR modular multilevel blended training. Two modules for Donation Professionals and Transplantation Professionals will be designed following a multi-level pattern:
- LEVEL 1. BASIC. This first level aims to engage and motivate the TEODOR learners
- LEVEL 2. INTERMEDIATE. The current level will boost learning
- LEVEL 3. ADVANCED. The third level aims at reinforcing what has been learnt and facilitate its transfer to the clinical setting.

4 Webinar series as part of ISN-TTS Sister Transplant Centre Program
Since 2016, the South Philippines Medical Center (SPMSC) got into engagement with the University of Barcelona (UB), Hospital Clinic of Barcelona (HCB), DTI foundation, and more recently, Fundació Puigvert, in the ISN-TTS Sister Transplant Centers Program; a joint partnership facilitated by International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and The Transplantation Society (TTS) to develop existing Kidney Transplant programs in emerging countries. Since then, several activities have been organized to promote knowledge and experience exchange between healthcare and educational institutions from Davao (Philippines) and Barcelona (Spain) regarding donation and transplantation.
Considering the current pandemic crisis, the team involved in the program decided to adapt the next initiatives to prioritize COVID-19 outbreak as an immediate concern to the international heathcare system and professionals.
Therefore, between June 11th and July 3rd a series of 4 Webinars have been organized, each of them focused on a current topic related to COVID-19, in order to share useful information between experts from our centers: Dr Josep Maria Miró, Dr Joan Ramon Badia, Mrs Carme Hernández, Dr José Jesús Broseta, Dr David Paredes and Dr Fritz Diekmann from Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and University of Barcelona; Dr Leopoldo Vega, Dr Maria Elinore Alba-Concha, Dr Ricardo B. Audan and Dr Maria Theresa Bad-ang from Southern Philippines Medical Center; Dr Anna Vila from Fundació Puigvert and Dr Chloë Ballesté and Dr Entela Kondi from DTI Foundation.
The webinar series were open and disseminated to the large public, although specifically targeted for the Southern Philippines Medical Center’s healthcare professionals, reaching a total of 494 attendees.
Eurofins Foundation collaborates with DTI
Eurofins Foundation supports DTI’s project “Save One Million Lives”. Since 2018, this project aims to help in the creation of the deceased organ donation program in developing countries, where patients with chronic terminal illnesses are a main concern.
Thanks to Eurofins Foundation, we will be able to perform the situational diagnosis and develop a plan proposal in two Indian regions. The actions will be as follows:
1. Situational diagnosis in terms of organ donation and transplantation. Only through an accurate diagnosis it will be possible to design a plan proposal adjusted to the area. This study aims at identifying organizational, structural, and educational needs and foreseeing solutions that can be implemented both in the short and in long term.
2. Proposal development: 3-year plan to build the deceased organ donation program in the study region, which will be focused on improving measures for in-hospital organ procurement structure.
Developing this kind of program will increase the transplant rates, which means that we will give a lot of people in the waiting list a second chance in life.
IDOTCOVID International Database on Organ Donation and Transplantation COVID-19
We are glad to share the latest initiative related to the COVID-19 pandemic situation! Thanks to our global network of collaborators we have created the IDOTCOVID registry (International Database on Organ Donation and Transplantation COVID-19) on behalf of the DTI Foundation, IDIBAPS from Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and IRODAT registry.
The IDOTCOVID is an open-access and available in real time to all collaborating centres to provide a global perspective towards the influence of COVID-19 on donation activity and transplant outcomes.
The present database tries to collect the demographic, clinical, analytical and therapeutic data of Solid Organ Transplant (SOT) recipients with COVID-19 to provide reliable information, and more importantly, a guide for the management of this population.
A major goal of the IDOTCOVID is the machine learning algorithm to assist the decision making process regarding the treatment alternatives and expected outcomes according to the different approaches worldwide.
The platform is available now, find more information at https://www.idotcovid.org/
If you are not registered yet, send an email to info@idotcovid.org and join us to benefit from this initiative!
DTI Foundation presents an innovative project: I-DTI
Suitable training of healthcare professional is a key aspect to increase the organ donation and transplantation rates. I-DTI aims to implement an online consultancy platform that will allow knowledge exchange between healthcare professionals for the purpose of helping solve doubtful donation scenarios and therefore increase the donor pool.
I-DTI has an important value in supporting programs for developing countries with limited access to knowledge.
Focused on consultancy and messaging services and discuss specific scenarios with a team of recognized experts, I-DTI allows users to create and share knowledge in chat groups, upload files and discuss specific scenarios with a team of recognized experts.
More features such as chat bot are under construction and will be available in the future. Also, I-DTI is offering a free trial until September to help during the COVID-19 global situation.

VI International Workshop on Uncontrolled and Controlled DCD
The VI International Workshop on Uncontrolled and Controlled DCD, organized by Aula Clinic, Hospital Clinic and DTI Foundation has recently been held in Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain. The two full days of activities included clinical cases and lectures related with practices regarding the results of transplantation for organs like kidney, liver, lung and heart.
The 42 participants from 13 countries also attended four workshops including organ recovery in animal lab, created with the aim of better understanding the best practices performed in DCD around the world. These professionals have been taught about how this organ donation system for transplantation works in different countries in Europe and new proposals have been made for further improvement.
DCD now contributes to 24% of deceased donors in Spain so local speakers, together with experts from England and Italy shared with the audience their experience, progresses, discussing about solutions for obstacles, concerns, and possible actions to go forward.
The participants are very satisfied with the course underlining the importance of the new expertise acquired in the fields of uncontrolled and controlled DCD.
